While dairy industry has grown at tremendous pace since last 70 years in the country and attained pole position as the largest milk producer as well as consumer while also being the largest employer & cash generator for rural India at the same time, further progress of the industry is contingent on few important factors, which we have classified into two different levels:
A. At Farmer Level:
India has turned out to be the largest producer of milk on sheer size of bovine population and in order to grow further, only way out is to grow productivity, which abysmally low as compared to developed countries like US as depicted bleow (We have 6 times catch up to do!)
Important aspects within improvement of productivity are mainly Breeding, Feeding & Animal Management, where there are issues of genetic policy (shall cover in a separate post on the genetic policy and what ails productivity of milch animals in India), usage of sexed semen, Artificial Insemination coverage & quality, area of farm land under cultivation for animal feed, usage of compound cattle-feed, awareness & extension services for farmers, etc.
B. At Industry Level:
Further, there are certain issues involved at industry level as follows:
Industry level issues involve uniform structure & policies for all players, support mechanism for exports, buffer-stocking, brand building, etc., rationalisation of GST for dairy products, incentives for investment in processing, more value-addition, etc.
While these are broad issues challenging further growth of the dairy industry, need attention of policy makers and Government bodies like AHD Ministry, NDDB, etc. to address it at the earliest for sustained future growth.
Shall cover these issues separately in detail one-by-one to throw more light.
